Bacopa monnieri extract

Bacopa monnieri also known as Brahmi, water hyssop or Indian pennywort is a plant native to several varied climates including India, Australia, Europe, and parts of America.

Its name is said to stem from the word Brahman that meaning “universal mind”, which perfectly illustrates the main effect of the plant. Allegedly, ancient Vedic scholars used Bacopa monnieri to better memorize lengthy sacred hymns and scriptures.

Ayurvedic practitioners classify it as a medhya rasayana – an herb taken to sharpen the intellect and improve mental deficits.

In other words, Bacopa monnieri is probably one of the oldest-known nootropics in the world. This plant is a great natural memory enhancer.

Bacopa monnieri is an enormous support for the nervous system. In particular, it stimulates the part responsible for memory processes. Thanks to that, it clearly improves intellectual functions and the organism’s cognitive processes, as well as contributes to the improvement of memory and concentration. Using Bacopa monnieri regularly perfects the speed of visual information processing, remembering new information and verbal learning.

The herb contains a mix of synergistic compounds. Some are unique to it, like brahmine, but its most important active compounds are its bacosides. These plant compounds are responsible for improving learning and memory. They could protect the brain, scavenge free radicals, and increase acetylcholine – the most important neurotransmitter for memory and learning.

Research suggest that Bacopa monnieri works by promoting neuron dendrite growth – the communication channels of human neurons. Better inter-neuronal communications mean better focus, faster memory formation, and quicker memory recall.

Since Bacopa monnieri improves memory function in healthy and young people it would be particularly effective in older people suffering with age-related memory loss.

In several clinical trials, Bacopa monnieri has been found to improve memory retention, recall speed, and recall accuracy in people living with age-related memory impairment.

Studies reported the efficacy of Bacopa monnieri on cognitive performance, anxiety, and depression in the elderly and found effective in enhancing cognitive functions in the elderly. This explains its use as a memory enhancer.

Another study demonstrated that Bacopa monnieri inhibits cholinergic degeneration and exhibits cognition enhancing activity in persons with Alzheimer’s disease.

Ginkgo biloba extract

Ginkgo biloba is one of the most ancient tree species on Earth, known with healing properties on its leaves. It has been used in Traditional Medicine for centuries because it has a beneficial effect on memory, heart, blood vessels, and blood pressure.

A number of studies have shown that standardized Ginkgo biloba extract (containing 24% flavonoid glycosides and 6% terpenoid lactones) improves blood circulation, especially to the brain and limbs, effectively affects the individual’s memory and slows down the aging of the brain.

The extract has been shown to help supply brain cells with glucose, which is vital for the proper functioning of the brain and central nervous system. At the same time, the extract improves the transmission of nerve signals between brain cells and thus further stimulates brain function and helps to enhance memory.

The combination of flavonoids and trilactones promotes blood circulation not only in the central but also in the peripheral circulatory system, which means that blood and nutrients are improved in the eyes, ears and other important sensory organs. This also improves limb irrigation.

Ginkgo biloba is a powerful antioxidant that has an effect on the whole body, improves thinking and memory, slows down brain aging, reduces fatigue, increases concentration and performance and protecting cells from alteration. According to recent studies, the herb also prevents and successfully combats Alzheimer’s disease.

Ginkgo biloba extract has shown favorable effects on cerebral circulation, neuronal cell metabolism, the cholinergic system; has antioxidant activity, reduces apoptosis, and is neuroprotective against NO‐ and β‐amyloid‐induced toxicity.

Ginkgo biloba extract contains a specific ingredient – ginkolic acid, which in high concentrations can cause gastric discomfort and allergic reactions. Its content in the extract is inevitable. It is important concentration of ginkolic acid not to exceed the safe dose of 5 ppm.

Ginseng extract

Ginseng is an excellent adaptogen and restorative agent that reduces the stress and tension and increases the body’s defenses. It is also known to improve memory, cognitive abilities and the overall tonus. Ginseng relieves nervous fatigue, helps with insomnia and nightmares, intense fear, forgetfulness, dizziness, impotence and exhaustion. Additionally, it has a positive effect with malignancies.

The active ingredient – ginsenosides – increase alertness and mental clarity and help with frequent mood swings.

Ginsenosides increased levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the cerebral cortex and have beneficial effects on attention, cognitive processing, sensorimotor function and auditory reaction time in healthy people.

In addition, ginsenosides improve central cholinergic function, and are used to treat memory deficits in humans.

Numerous studies show that ginsenosides can reduce or prevent memory deficits associated with cholinergic function. Ginsenosides enhance acetylcholine (ACh) levels in the central nervous system, by increasing choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity or by inhibiting acetylhydrolase (AChE) activity.

By acting on the brain as a stimulant, ginseng can improve mental activity and ability to concentrate. As an antioxidant, it protects vulnerable brain cells from the free radicals. And this prevents memory loss and degenerative diseases.
